You don’t have to be PGA winning Freddy Couples or even a high profile sports star Like Adam Cooney to start living pain free! Orthokine-Therapy is a brand new and effective biological treatment of osteoarthritis and back pain. It doesn’t rely on the use of any foreign material, instead using individual autologous proteins that are derived from the patient’s own blood. This makes the Orthokine-Therapy the equivalent of a complete autologous form of treatment which is applied as medication.
The development of Orthokine-Therapy came out of the fact that interleukin-1 (IL-1) plays a key role in the pathology of osteoarthritis or intervertebral disc degeneration/prolapse. The biological antagonist – interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) – is what intervenes in the physiological mechanism of the diseases. Since this antagonist is naturally present in the blood, the production of Orthokine allows for the antagonist to be produced and extracted at up to 30 times higher concentrations.
The Orthokine Method
Blood samples are taken from the arm vein using a special syringe. Glass beads inside the syringe induce white blood cells to synthesize increased amounts of the protective IL-1RA proteins that inhibit osteoarthritis.
Incubated at 37 degrees (to mimic the human body), protein synthesis is promoted within the optimum environment. A centrifuge separates the amber serum from the blood clot. This serum contains high concentrations of both protective and regenerative proteins. The serum is filled into several syringes, and injected into the patient. They will receive 3-6 injections in either the afflicted joint or spine area.
Treating Osteoarthritis with Orthokine
Osteoarthritis is a progressive degeneration and destruction of joint cartilage. Ultimately, it leads to our natural shock absorbers becoming inhibited, and the joint is unable to perform its basic function.
Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is responsible for this destruction of cartilage tissue, and is found in small but aggressive concentrations in osteoarthritis. To treat osteoarthritis, the interleukin-1-receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) protein is extracted from the patient’s blood, and re-injected into the affected joint.
Treating Back Pain with Orthokine
Nerve roots are often irritated or inflamed as a result of age-related changes in the spinal column, slipped discs, or bony narrowing of the spinal column. Nerve roots can become irritated or inflamed, and this can lead to pain and loss of sensation or numbness in the legs.
This is caused by the release of cytokines – a signal from the immune system that contributes to the onset of pain and nerve damage. The cytokine Interleukin-1 is responsible for this inflammation, while the antagonist – interleukin-1-receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), is anti-inflammatory and can inhibit the pain associated with the treatment of compressed and inflamed nerves.
Now being utilised by several AFL and NRL teams Orthokine is also available to the general public and has helped many people return to living pain free again. Contact us for more information and where you can be treated.
